Hey, everybody. Welcome to today's lesson on the different forms of medication. This lesson discusses the characteristics of elixirs, tinctures, and syrups, their preparation methods, and the importance of understanding their properties for effective medication administration. Elixirs, tinctures, and syrups are all forms of liquid medications and more specifically are all examples of solutions. Remember, a solution is used when a medication needs to be completely dissolved in a liquid medium for consistent dosage and absorption. Elixirs are clear, sweet liquids that usually contain alcohol and water as their base. They are used when the active ingredient for a medication will not dissolve in water alone. They are also useful when a medication has an unpleasant taste. For example, a cough elixir containing codeine, an opioid, offers an effective cough suppressant in a more pleasant tasting form.
