Bit Depth and Quantization - Video Lesson

Hey, everybody. Welcome back. This lesson is about bit depth in a digital process called quantization. Bit depth is simply the total number of possible brightness levels or shades of gray, that can be assigned to any given pixel in the digital image. So a large bit depth means the digital system can produce an image with lots of brightness levels, which is good. Here's an example of three images that all have a different bit depth. They're the same radiograph, but they were processed with different bit depths. The first image has a very large bit depth. Which means the digital system can display more brightness levels or more shades of gray. The second image has a much smaller bit depth and the last image has the smallest bit depth and the fewest shades of gray. There's actually a way that we can calculate the bit depth.
