Learn MoreSkeletal Anatomy: Bone Classifications & Bony Markings - Video Lesson
Hey, everybody. Welcome to today's lesson on skeletal anatomy, bone classifications and bony markings. This essential topic forms the foundation for understanding and identifying bony anatomy on a radiograph. Let's dive in. As you may recall from previous lessons, the adult skeletal system is composed of two hundred and six separate bones divided into the axial skeleton containing eighty bones and the appendicular skeleton containing one hundred twenty six bones. These bones are classified according to their shape either as long, short, flat, irregular, or sesamoid bones. Long bones are exclusively located within the appendicular skeleton and are comprised of a central body and two rounded ends that are coated with hyaline cartilage. Examples of long bones include the femurae and humerae, as well as the phalanges of the fingers and toes. Short bones consist mainly of cancellous tissue with a thin outer cuff.
