A fracture is the medical term for a broken bone. These are commonly seen by radiologic technologists, so it is important to understand the classifications of fractures and how to recognize them on a radiograph. Fractures can be classified by the fracture pattern, cause, body part, or a combination of the three. Fractures are also classified as open or closed and displaced or nondisplaced. Open or compound fractures occur when the bone breaks through the skin, while closed means the bone does not break the skin.
