In this lesson we will discuss patient positioning and scan planes including common patient positions and situations where modifications may be needed either because of patient condition or sonographic findings. Let's get started. In abdominal sonography scanning, optimal imaging depends on two critical elements, patient positioning and scan plane orientation. Understanding these concepts not only enhances image quality but also ensures accurate diagnosis and patient comfort. In clinical sonography the most common patient position for abdominal examinations is supine where the patient lies flat on their back. This position allows for standard anterior access to abdominal organs such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys and spleen.
