Consent (Express and Implied) - Video Lesson

Hey, everybody. Welcome back to our patient care series on consent in health care. In a different lesson, we discussed informed consent, which you'll recall is the most formal type of consent. Informed consent involves a specific set of steps and documentation. In this lesson, we will discuss expressed consent and implied consent. Express consent can be provided verbally or nonverbally, but must be explicitly granted by the patient or their legal guardian, which may be a parent or a health care proxy, such as someone who has been granted power of attorney. We will discuss these situations more in-depth in future lessons. Express consent may be obtained for radiography procedures where IV contrast is not used or when administering medications orally, intramuscularly, or through other noninvasive routes.
