First, let's talk about what gadolinium is and what it does. Gadolinium is a paramagnetic rare earth metal that enhances MRI images by influencing the relaxation times of nearby hydrogen protons in tissues. Put more simply, gadolinium creates a local magnetic disturbance that makes the hydrogen atoms in water molecules return to their resting state more quickly after being excited by the MRI's magnetic field.
