Magnetic Susceptibility - Video Lesson
Hey, everybody. Welcome to today's lesson on instrumentation in MRI. This lesson will discuss how paramagnetic, diamagnetic, and ferromagnetic substances interact with the magnetic field. Magnetization or magnetic susceptibility refers to how much certain materials, like iron deposits and calcifications within the body, become magnetized when placed in a magnetic field. Different materials have differing levels of magnetic susceptibility and may be attracted or repelled by a magnetic field. These differences are due to the atomic structure of the material. Specifically, the number of paired versus unpaired electrons surrounding the nucleus. If all electrons are paired, the substance slightly repels the static field. The more unpaired electrons there are, the more susceptible the substance is. There are three types of magnetic substances.
