Black-Blood Imaging - Video Lesson

Hey, everybody. Welcome back to today's lesson on MRI imaging techniques. This lesson focuses on black blood imaging, which is a type of flow dependent angiography. We will discuss how to achieve black blood imaging as well as its advantages and disadvantages. It is important to understand these concepts in order to optimize your imaging protocols. Let's get started. Remember, flow dependent angiography is a non contrast enhanced MRI imaging technique. In flow dependent angiography, we use a flow phenomena of blood to enhance the diagnostic image. This allows us to provide a noninvasive imaging option to patients, particularly those with contraindications to gadolinium based contrasts. We may use either bright blood imaging techniques where blood has high signal intensity or black blood imaging techniques where blood has low signal intensity. This lesson focuses on black blood imaging. Black blood imaging is a technique used in MRI to nullify the signal from flow.
