CT Neoplastic Diseases - Video Lesson

Hey everybody, welcome back. This lesson is about the most common neoplastic diseases of the extremities that we observe in CT. Neoplastic pathologies involve the abnormal growth of tissue resulting in tumors and cancers. Neoplastic processes can occur throughout the body, including the extremities. We'll start with bone metastases. Bone metastases are secondary malignant tumors in the bone, most commonly from breast, prostate, lung, or kidney cancer. Bone metastases are by far the most common neoplasms of the bones. They are most common in the vertebral column and pelvis, but they also occur in the long bones of the extremities. They typically present as lytic, sclerotic or mixed density lesions causing cortical destruction. CT is used for assessing fracture risk, guiding biopsy and supplementing SPECT scans. So CT is not used to go looking for metastatic bone lesions in the extremities, but CT still has a role.
