Hey everybody, welcome back. This lesson is about some neoplastic and inflammatory diseases of the spine. There are many neoplastic conditions of the spine and many inflammatory diseases of the spine. In this lesson, we'll be discussing two neoplastic diseases: vertebral metastases and multiple myeloma. We'll also be discussing two inflammatory diseases: infectious spondylitis and ankylosing spondylitis. The word spondylitis literally means inflammation of the spine. Remember that these two categories represent different disease processes. Neoplastic diseases involve abnormal tissue growth. Inflammatory diseases involve tissue inflammation, often as a result of infection or autoimmune processes. We'll start with vertebral metastases. Vertebral metastases are secondary malignant tumors in the spine, most commonly from breast, prostate, lung, or kidney cancer. Cancer can spread to almost
