CT Sphenoid Bone - Video Lesson
Hey everybody, welcome back. This lesson is about the sphenoid bone as seen in CT imaging. We'll actually start with an illustration of the sphenoid bone from the AP view, as well as the lateral view. The sphenoid bone is a large complex bone that articulates with every other cranial bone. These images are helpful because you can see the shape and position of the sphenoid bone relative to the other cranial bones. Notice that the sphenoid bone is positioned at the floor of the cranium and forms the posterior portion of the orbital cavity. It has a very unique shape with broad, flat appendages called wings. Next, we'll look at axial CT images of the sphenoid bone. This is an axial view of the cranium. Notice on the graphic in the lower left side of the image that this image has been created in an axial plane that is approximately parallel to the supraorbital meatal line.
