CT Occipital Bone - Video Lesson
Hey, everybody. Welcome back. This lesson is about the occipital bone as seen in CT imaging. As usual, we'll start with a volume rendered image. This is a volume rendered image of the cranium. It's created from very thin overlapping slices. The occipital bone forms portions of the inferior and posterior aspects of the cranium. On the posterior surface, we can see the external occipital protuberance, which is a point of muscle attachment. On the superior margin of the occipital bone, we can see the lambdoid suture where the occipital bone joins to the parietal bones. On the anterior surface, we can see the occipital temporal suture where the occipital bone joins to the temporal bones. It's also called the occipitomastoid suture because this is the mastoid portion of the temporal bone. Next, we'll look at a sagittal view of the occipital bone.
