CT Meninges - Video Lesson
Everybody, welcome back. This lesson is about the meninges of the brain as seen in CT imaging. We'll start with an illustration. This illustration represents a coronal dissection of the brain and cranium. The brain is covered by several protective layers. The outermost layer is, of course, the cranial bone itself. Between the cranial bones and the brain is a series of tissues called the meninges. The outermost meningi directly adjacent to the cranial bone is called the dura mater. The dura mater is relatively tough, dense and thick. In fact, the dura mater is the only layer of the meninges that can be seen on CT imaging. The next layer getting closer to the brain is the arachnoid matter, or sometimes just called the arachnoid. This layer is very thin and delicate. Visually, it has a web like appearance. The word arachnoid refers to this spider web like appearance. The last and deepest of the meninges is the pia mater. The pia mater is a thin tissue that
