CT Dural Venous Sinus Thrombosis - Video Lesson

Hey everybody, welcome back. This lesson is about dural venous sinus thrombosis. This condition is exactly as the name implies. Dural venous sinus thrombosis is a thrombotic occlusion or blood clot within a dural sinus in the brain. Remember that dural sinus is the name given to the venous passageways in the brain formed by the dura mater. These veins in the brain can become occluded by a thrombus, just like any other vein in any other part of the body. In the brain, this is especially significant because it diminishes blood flow through the brain, potentially leading to cerebral swelling, edema, infarction, hemorrhage, and even stroke. Dural venous sinus thrombosis can be identified with non contrast imaging of the brain, but CT venography is much more conclusive. In CT venography, dural venous sinus thrombosis presents as a filling defect within a dural sinus. The patient in this image was evaluated
