CT Brain CSF Disorders - Video Lesson

Hey everybody, welcome back. This lesson is about disorders of the cerebrospinal fluid within the brain. We'll start with hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid, that's CSF, within the ventricular system of the brain, often due to obstruction, overproduction, or impaired absorption. The literal meaning of hydrocephalus is water on the brain. Hydro means water, cephalus refers to the head. So hydrocephalus is excessive fluid accumulation within the brain. Hydrocephalus is fairly easy to identify. Hydrocephalus typically presents as symmetrically enlarged ventricles with thinning of the surrounding brain parenchyma. Radiologists will use very precise measurements within specific aspects of the ventricular system to define hydrocephalus, but for our purposes, we just need to recognize overfilling of the ventricles. That's what's happening in this patient. The lateral
